Overhead beams

Hi There

I am moving intoa new home,and the bedroom has small overhead beams on the cieling. the ceiling is not really very high. The beams are not load bearing & are decorative. Is this s real problem , if so will painting them out eliminate the shar chi or do flutes actually work ? I dont really want to go to the trouble of removing them, however I do not want to be subject to any problems the may cause. please help.
